5 Signs of a Food Intolerance in Dogs and What to Do Next
You are feeding a good food, but something seems off. A dog may have a food intolerance, which is a digestive problem with a specific ingredient, unlike a true allergy, which involves the immune system. The signs can be subtle and can have other causes, so your vet should always be your first call.
Sign 1: Itching that lasts all year
Chronic itching, paw licking, scooting, or repeated ear problems that do not follow the seasons can sometimes point to food. They can also come from fleas, infections, or environmental allergies.
Sign 2: An unpredictable tummy
Frequent gas, soft stools, or occasional vomiting with no obvious cause is worth discussing with your vet.
Sign 3: Ear problems that keep coming back
Red, waxy, or smelly ears need a vet visit to treat any infection. Ask whether food could be a contributing factor.
Sign 4: A dry or dull coat
A flaky, dull coat or thinning patches can have many causes, including nutrition, skin conditions, and hormone problems.
Sign 5: Low energy
If your dog seems less playful despite a clean bill of health, mention it at the next checkup.
What to do if you suspect a food intolerance
- Visit your vet. They can rule out parasites, infections, and other medical problems.
- Ask about an elimination diet. Vets sometimes recommend feeding a limited diet for several weeks, then reintroducing foods one at a time.
- Audit everything your dog eats. Treats, chews, and table scraps all count during a trial.
- Keep a journal. Note what your dog eats and any change in symptoms.
A note about our treats
All of our recipes contain eggs, organic peanut butter, and organic brown rice. Because of that, they are not suitable for a strict elimination diet or for dogs with sensitivities to those ingredients. See our FAQ for full ingredient and allergen information.
