🗣️ Talking to Your Dog Like They're a Person (We All Do It)
Be honest. You've done it. Just this week, probably.
You walked in the door and said, "Hi buddy! Did you miss me? Did you? DID YOU?" And then, because they were still looking at you, you kept going. "Okay, so work was a lot today. We had a meeting that could have been an email."
And your dog just sat there. Tilted their head. Listened like you were reading them the evening news.
🐶 You ask them if they want to go outside. In full sentences.
🐶 You answer for them in a funny voice. ("No, I did NOT eat the sock.")
🐶 You say "we" about everything. "Are WE hungry? Do WE need to go out?"
🐶 You've apologized to a dog for stepping on their tail, and you meant every word.
🐶 You've told a dog something you haven't told another living soul.
Think about it. Your dog has heard your best singing, your worst phone calls, and every practice run of what you were going to say to your boss. They have never repeated a word. They have never rolled their eyes. They have never once said, "You already told me this."
And somehow, that head tilt feels like the best advice you've ever gotten.
Here's what we believe: they may not understand the words, but they understand you. The tone. The excitement. The way you say their name when you're happy, and the way your voice goes soft when you're not. Nobody listens quite like a dog does, and nobody makes you feel less alone while you're saying it.
So the next time you catch yourself mid-sentence, explaining your whole day to a creature who is mostly interested in whether dinner is next, don't feel silly. You're not talking to yourself. You're talking to your best listener, and they're giving you their full, tilted, undivided attention.
At Duke's Delights, we think the best conversations end with a treat. (They listened so well, after all.) Our Blueberry Delight is a great way to say thanks for the free therapy. 🫐
